Sheffield Historical Society Presents: Elizabeth “MumBett” Freeman Walk and Event
Sunday, August 18
Walk to Freedom: 8:30am- Ashley House - 117 Cooper Hill Rd, Sheffield, MA
Community Conversation: 11am - Sheffield Historical Society - 159 Main St. Sheffield, MA
The Sheffield Historical Society will be hosting a celebration of the life of Elizabeth “MumBett” Freeman on Sunday, August 18th at 11am. The wonderfully talented Wanda Houston- actress, performing artist and vocalist- will recount her experience reenacting the life of Elizabeth Freeman. Wanda first performed the play “Meet Elizabeth Freeman” written by Teresa Miller, courtesy of the Museum of the American Revolution, in 2021. Wanda will read excerpts from the play and entertain questions from the audience. Light refreshments will be served. Any questions about the Talk can be directed to the Sheffield Historical Society ([email protected]).
Prior to the event, a Walk to Freedom reenactment will take place at the Ashley House in Sheffield. This walk commemorates the 4-mile walk MumBett took from the Colonel Ashley House to Theodore Sedgwick’s home on Main St. Her goal was to petition Sedgwick to help her win her freedom in court. Victory was hers on August 21, 1781.
To participate in the Walk to Freedom, the public can meet at the Ashley House at 8:30am. After the event is held at the Historical Society, we will offer rides back to the Ashley House to retrieve vehicles. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, sunscreen and bring water bottles. Any questions about the Walk specifically can be directed to Jana Laiz ([email protected]).
Both events are free to the public and all are welcome. This celebration of the story is a collaboration of SHS and Crow Flies Press.
