Part of the Housatonic Heritage Series
This interactive, multimedia exhibit breaks down the history of the Muhheconneok, the “People of the Waters that are Never Still.” From their ancestral homelands in the Berkshires, to their present home in Wisconsin, their journey is told through the collective lens of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans, in collaboration with the Sheffield Historical Society and the Mount Everett Regional School Art Department.
The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans have worked for decades in research, preservation, education, and governance to promote equality and programs that strengthen their culture and community heritage. Making connections to their ancestral homelands continues to be of sacred value. The exhibit combines a variety of art forms, artifacts, audio and video elements, including content from Dorothy David’s "A Brief History of the Mohican Nation" as well as many personal narratives.
This exhibit is available to be displayed free of charge in schools, residential facilities, and organizations. Contact us for more information.

The Milt Barnum All American Tool Exhibit
Before technology meant smartphones and computers, people were inventing and using simple--and not so simple--tools to make their lives easier. The Sheffield Historical Society's Milt Barnum All American Tool Exhibit showcased some of those antique tools, exploring how they transformed over the years, and surprisingly how many of them have stayed pretty much the same.
Milt Barnum, a lifelong resident of Sheffield and founding member of the Sheffield Historical Society, was an avid collector and his expansive collection encompasses a range of trades including tanning, woodworking, trapping, farming, and homemaking. The Society put those tools on display in August 2014 at the Old Stone Store offering a glimpse of how life was like in Sheffield in a bygone era. The “What's It?” table challenged visitors to figure out exactly how the more unusual objects were used. Thank you to everyone who cam e out to the exhibit. We had a record turnout of visitors, averaging around 50 people a day! This just shows what Milt meant to the members of this community, and how he continues to enrich it.
